Guenther STRAUB (AUSTRIA)

Guenther STRAUB was born Dec. 4 th 1957 in Vienna. He received 11 years of classical piano education and took part in piano competitions. At the age of 16 he was “infected” by the blues piano virus and started to practise Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis and Pete Johnson. Very soon Guenther performed in public and quickly became well-known in Austria and abroad. From the 80's on Straub toured in Europe and played at numerous Jazz- festivals (e.g. Jazz Piano Festival Paris, Riom Piano Festival, Jazzfestival Skagen, Stars of Boogie Woogie –Vienna, Jazzfest Cannes, Shake the lake, Kempten Jazzfrühling, Musikverein Vienna, etc.). He appeared on stage with musicians like Axel Zwingenberger, Jay McShann, Rob Agerbeek, Vince Weber, Ray Bryant, Bob Seely, Christian Willisohn, Martin Schmitt and more. During the following years he turned over to the virtuous art of Stride Piano in the tradition of Fats Waller or J.P. Johnson and adapts classical tunes to Stride Piano. Apart from his solistic work he plays in a traditional swing trio (bass, drums) or on two pianos (Gershwin, Porter, etc.).
